ALFA ROMEO 156 Veloce Selespeed. (2.0 Litre twin spark.)

Features:

You spend more time in the car, than outside the car looking at it (maybe...) so start with the interior. (I'm guessing everyone knows what a 156 looks like from the outside...? well if not there are pictures at the bottom.)

Full black (dark grey) leather interior. Incl. Embroidered Alfa badge on rear of front seats. Seats are not worn. Alfa Romeo say its dark grey, I'd say it was black, a blind man would be happy to see the difference.

Interior is very tidy. No real marks (In so far as I have found, little bit of carpet wear near where the drivers right foot goes.)

New mats for drivers, passenger and rear passengers.

Rear seats look like new. I have no kids, no pets and no friends, I'm also a none smoker, so no nasty burn marks or smells.

Kenwood CD/ AM/FM stereo: It is a flip face model when the ignition is turned the stereo front plate flips over to see you. When the ignition is off the face plate flips back. This is the only modification from standard the car has had made and that is because it came with a tape player as standard. (What ever one of those are :)

Interior includes the leather clad drivers (or passenger) arm rest.

The seats are not heated.

Air conditioning (or climate control) works fine has variable temperature control and can blow nice and chilly or hot depending on requirements. Note: The dash board light the illuminates the dial that controls the air-con however seems to be dead.

Exterior.

Silver metallic paint.

Full Alfa Romeo body kit incl. High tail.

Some stone chips on the nose.

A small scratch on the driver side front panel (nothing to worry about, see picture [right) and a rub mark (?) on the drivers side front wheel. (not done by me ]so not sure what the hell happened, some idiot turned too close to the car I guess while it was parked, but other than that I don't know.) Again, partly thanks to the colour and partly thanks to it being really small, you can't see it.

Out of view under the front bumper is where I discovered that the Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed with full Alfa body-kit  cannot go over speed bumps any faster that 17 miles per hour. (You have been warned.)

Alloys are in great condition one has a minor blemish. No scuffing, no rattling, no rolling.

Mechanical.

Replacements incl.

- New radiator *

- New water pump*

- New thermometer*

- Cam-belt was changed at 49,000 miles should be good for another 30,000

- Part service history (see below.)

- Oil only knows the stuff the dealer puts in and Mobil 1.

- All tyres i very good condition. Front two have been replaced recently and have less than 2,000 miles on them. Back ones are in excellent condition.

- Brakes seem sharp and responsive and the break fluid levels have been check frequently.

OK, the hard sell.

Mileage: 77,000 miles.

First reaction is "Yea gads, its an Alfa that has been to the moon."

OK, Firstly the moon is 238,857 miles away.

Secondly, these are motorway miles. I drove these miles before my new job. Basically I to  three locations, very very frequently.

Manchester (Warrington)

Reading (Theale)

London (Heathrow)

As a technical account manager.

Depending on who you ask, motorway miles are worth somewhere between 10 miles and 3 miles compared to a city drive. Why? Because of all the starts from cold. Cold starts kill cars. My car drove from Cambridgeshire to the three above locations a minimum of once a week. (sometimes more, sometimes less.) but as far as the wear and tear on the car is concerned I might have well been been doing a 20mile commute home and back everyday. This detail is backed up by the condition of the car. It looks and feels unused, even though its high mileage.  Remember: A car thats been used as a glorified shopping trolley will fall apart long before this trojan

The reason it has a part service history is because of the number of miles. Its a little unfair that I have to service a car every 3 - 4 months and depending on the season (ho ho ho) I found it a little pricy if you follow my drift, add to that a wife that mutters those immortal 7 little words "You've never bought me a diamond ring" and I think you know what I'm talking about.

I have a new job now where the journey is by train to London and back everyday and the car, sadly, no longer plays steed to my travels.

I'll be sorry to see her go, perhaps for some people it is difficult to believe but you spend 4 - 6 hours almost every working day in a car, you get attached to the thing. Stupid, yeah I know. Miss the damn thing yes. We've been scurried down the A14 together when others have had to abandon their cars in the snow, we went to Torquay on holiday together, went to stone henge and some trips to the east coast, carried the Christmas tree home and I've spent hours detailing and cleaning the exterior. (Still prettier than those ugly Japanese body-kitted carbuncles.)

Difference between Lusso and Veloce? Apparently, Lusso = luxury, Veloce = sport. What that equates to is slightly (very slightly) stiffer suspension, a better exhaust, (better Alfa Tone, so my Alfa Club member dad tells me) and graphite dash (as opposed to wood in the Lusso) SO I AM TOLD.

I've driven my dads S Reg Lusso 156 Estate and other than my dads car being longer I couldn't tell the difference. Many people can't tell the difference apparently.

Another fact. It's a Selespeed, semi-automatic. I generally leave it in fully automatic mode but semi-automatic gear shifting is better for overtaking than waiting around for the kick-down to think about what it is supposed to be doing. In my opinion the novelty value is high, useability?  like practicality, for me not much, if you like overtaking, well each to their own. 20 odd thousand miles a year and you learn that the slow steady driver is less stressed and less sleepy when he gets home, than the 7,000 mile a year nutter who thinks he is playing a racing game.

ohh, nearly forgot! Taxed and tested (mot'd) until July '05.

Aren't ALFA's rubbish and unreliable? Not if they are well maintained and driven regularly. Some that rolled off the production line had, shall we call them,  "qwirks". The interior isn't as flush for example, problems with the gearbox, etc., these problem were some 70,000 miles ago for this car. This one's alright!

Has it ever been crashed. Nope. Not even bumper hard, I think I've done about 2 emergency stops in it. (in 70,000 miles) nothing else like that.
